A Tuesday morning bowling league on the west side of Madison, is looking for additional bowlers.

Published Monday, 08/28/17 10:24pm - Expires Wednesday, 09/13/17 10:24pm - ( Reads)
The 9 am Tuesday mixed bowling league was founded by a group of women from Midvale Heights and is entering its 46th year, still retaining that name. It has openings for all ages and skills. We are a no-pressure, non-sanctioned, handicap league that has players up into their mid-80s, and bowlers with averages also in the mid-80s.

It starts the Tuesday after Labor Day and runs until the end of March, with a banquet — and prizes for everyone!-- in April. Cost is expected at $9.50 a week and all league members are entitled to $1 per game, unlimited practice bowling!

All bowlers are welcome, with a special invitation to those who have never bowled. We bowl at Schwoegler's, which is on the west side of Madison, just off Odana Road, a few blocks from West Towne Mall.

For more information, contact me, league president at or Schwoegler's at 833-7272. Singles, couples and groups of people are all welcome!!

Thanks so much,

PS ~ While it is best to join the league at the beginning of the season, people can join at any time. However, late-formed teams find it hard to place high in the end-of-season rankings.

Published Wednesday, 11/16/16 12:05pm - Expires Monday, 12/26/16 12:05pm - (422 Reads)
Dear Zoo neighbors –

We hope you’ve already heard our big news: This winter, you’ll have a chance to see the zoo in a whole new light as we premier Zoo Lights at Henry Vilas Zoo. More information is available on our Facebook page (www.facebook.org/HenryVilasZoo) and on our website (http://www.vilaszoo.org/zoolights).

We certainly hope you’ll consider making Zoo Lights part of your holiday and winter break traditions. We’re also wondering if you would consider volunteering to help make it all possible. Each evening of Zoo Lights, a crew of paid and volunteer staff will team up to welcome guests and ensure that they have a positive experience during their visit.

Here are the details:
Zoo Lights runs from November 22-Jan 1st, though not every evening. The schedule includes:
  • November 22 (Member Night) - still looking for 4 volunteers
  • November 30 (Brew Lights) - fully staffed
  • December 12th (United Way Non-Profit Night) - still looking for 3 volunteers
  • Thursdays - Sundays from November 25-Jan 1st
  • Monday-Wednesday 12/26-28.

Volunteer shift times vary depending on day of the week and role but are generally Fridays and Saturdays 5-10:15pm & Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdays and Sundays 5-9:15pm.

Shift roles including Greeting, Ticket Sales, and Carousel.

Volunteers must be at least 14 to volunteer on their own. Kids 10+ can volunteer alongside an adult. You can volunteer on your own or bring a team of co-workers, neighbors or friends (as long as you are willing to be the point person for scheduling and information sharing).

If you are interested in helping with Zoo Lights, email me . I’ll send you an updated list of available shifts and answer any questions you might have. Please also feel free to call me at 258-9490 x31 if that is more convenient.

There are many other ways for volunteers 9+ to volunteer to support Henry Vilas Zoo in seasonal, ongoing roles. To learn more, visit www.vilaszoo.org/GetInvolved.

Thanks so much, neighbors, for your support of the Zoo in every form – the Zookeepers Feed the Animals, but the Community Feeds the Zoo!

Thank you!

Upcoming girls' ULTIMATE FRISBEE clinic --> SUN 10/16, 1-4PM

Published Wednesday, 10/05/16 12:50am - Expires Sunday, 10/16/16 04:00pm - (375 Reads)
Dear parents of rad/strong/adventurous/energetic girls:

We are hard at work finalizing the details for this year's learn-to-play ultimate frisbee clinic for girls, which will be held from 1-4PM on Sunday, October 16th at Brittingham Park in Madison (829 W. Washington Ave.).

The event will again be FREE, and will be modeled after last year's wildly successful clinic at Breese Stevens Stadium. Girls (age 8-18) will be grouped by age/experience, and each tier will work with three or four coaches from Madison's elite women's club team, Heist. It will be a fun, relaxed session focused on building basic skills in the context of plenty of socializing and free play.

Participating girls will receive a free ultimate disc again this year, and will also take home some new ultimate skills and great memories. You'll again need to print and sign a participation waiver and a medical form (available at the website below). Though day-of registration on site is OK, we prefer that you pre-register again at the following URL to ensure your daughter receives a disc:

If you are on Facebook and know of girls who may be interested, don't hesitate to invite their parents via our event page! https://www.facebook.com/events/339820796361478/

Feel free to email me with any questions not answered on the websites above. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD AND ENCOURAGE YOUR DAUGHTERS TO INVITE FRIENDS! We look forward to seeing you there!

Volunteer to help a westside older adult with their household tasks.
Help a senior in your neighborhood remain safely in their home by assisting with tasks they are unable to perform and unable to afford hired help.

Volunteers are matched with a senior and may help with one or a few of the following tasks: vacuuming, dusting, mopping, organizing items, cleaning kitchen and bathrooms, changing bed linens and outdoor chores. Friendly visiting can also make a huge impact in a senior’s life. Once matched with the senior, the volunteer and the senior can set up the meeting times and the tasks/activities. Locations vary.
